The Best Dystopian Fiction of 2025

2026 marks the ten-year anniversary of my list of The 110 Best Dystopian Novels. Every year since then, I have produced annual lists of the best new dystopian fiction. This year’s list compiled curated lists from The Honey Pop, Amazon, The Guardian, The New York Times, Publishers Weekly and more, suggestions from readers on Goodreads, and ratings on Goodreads and Amazon. The following five* novels stood out as the best dystopian fiction of 2025.

To complement these rankings, I have created two pieces of bonus content:

  1. Recommendations for the best dystopian novels from seventeen contemporary dystopian authors like Rebecca Danzenbaker (author of the fourth ranked novel on this list), Neal Shusterman and Lois Lowry.
  2. A one-page PDF shopping guide to the complete list of The Best Dystopian Novels.

You can access both of these free resources using the form below. And now, here is The Best Dystopian Fiction of 2025!

5. The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami

A woman is arrested and detained when an algorithm analyzing her dreams determines she is at risk of harming her husband. When a new resident arrives, she finds herself pitted against the very companies that imprisoned her.

4. Soulmatch by Rebecca Danzenbaker

Two hundred years after World War III, the government examines every eighteen-year-old’s past lives in a trial that sees them set for life or imprisoned. When Sivon’s results make her a global celebrity and the target of anonymous threats, she is forced to confront the system while keeping her loved ones safe. Amazon editors named Danzenbaker’s debut novel one of the best teen and young adult books of the year.

3. Coldwire By Chloe Gong

Coldwire was an instant New York Times bestseller and made Amazon’s list of the best teen and young adult books of the year.

2. The Compound by Aisling Rawle

With the outside world falling apart, twenty young adults compete to stay in the remote desert Compound in a hugely popular reality show. If she can make it to the end, Lily will receive a slew of incredible prizes, but how far will she go to outlast her competitors?

1. Silver Elite by Dani Francis

In a world where psychic powers mean death, a rebel psychic is captured and forced to join the enemy’s elite training program. There, she has a chance to destroy the enemy from the inside—if she can survive the training. Silver Elite made the New York Times’s list of 100 Notable Books of 2025.

*-When compiling these annual updates, I exclude books that are prequels or sequels to novels that appeared on one of my previous dystopian lists. This year, Suzanne Collins’s Sunrise on the Reaping (The Hunger Games series) and Tahereh Mafi’s Watch Me (the Shatter Me series) were critically and popularly acclaimed novels which fit that description.
